I have a 37g tank and I'm thinking of doing live plants this time around. I've never done live plants before, so suggestions and advice are welcome.

Well there are low, medium, and high lights that are required for certain plants. Depending on your lights, your plant choices will be limited. You can get away with less light if you have fertilization however, but not THAT much leeway.
