I use alder cones and Alder/Oak/Almond leaves in my shrimp tanks but would it be safe to add the dead oak or alder branches to the tanks to give a more natural look?

As far as the oak branches are concerned, It's really no different than any other DW. Ensure it's from a hardwood tree, boil it to kill unwanted microbes and help release tannins. I'd assume the same for almond trees.

Just be sure they are very dried out.

Yep that's what I was going for when I said "dead branches". Branches that are dead which are no longer green and full of sap. I know what condition wood needs to be in to be added to an aquarium I was curious if specific types were safe.
