I would say plenty of space - I have 5 in 150gal (4ft tank) and they will squabble still. If you get a pair on my limited experience I find they like about a square foot of room to keep other fish away from eggs.
Other than that I just have some ornaments and plenty of plants to give a bit of cover.

Tall driftwood and tall plants help too. Out of sight = out of mind.
