I already have a Pleco that cleans the glass and picks up any food that sinks to the bottom, but was wondering if there was a fish that can filter the water.

Bamboo shrimp filter the water column for food. Though i dont think that this is the sort of "filter" you were looking for :)

What do you mean by the water column? Thanks for the help. :)

Some people have clams to filter out the particulates .... not sure how easy this is.

To remove nitrogenous wastes, you will need some kind of plants (rather than fish or animals). You could grow algae as your nitrogen scrubber. Most people would do that in a sump, so the algae is out of sight.

Clams use nitrates as a food source, but they are notoriously hard to keep alive from what I have read.
