There are many different things you can do with these, and other, controllers. The key bit of knowledge is that you need to have the probes and/or any other equipment needed to do what you want.

You can not dim any light. Dimmable LED lights would work.
Things I have done with apex and I have only had it for 2 weeks.
Setup auto top off to go on when a float switch opens from low water level.
Have float switch in my overflow box. If it opens return pump and skimmed shuts down. If overflow fills up it means lost siphon or plumbing clogged somewhere.
I also have a float switch for high water level in sump. If auto top off pimp gets stuck on or lower float switch fails. If hi sump switch is on turns off skimmer, return pump and ATO pump.
Set my lights to come on few hours earlier on weekends.
Setup water change timer and cleaning timers.
Among other things. But I have 2 failsafes if things fail I won't have overflow.
I also have complete control anywhere from my iPhone
Not to mention my temp fluctuates about 1 degree thru day and ph 7.9 to 8.3.
