i tested my tank and it read ph results between 7.4 and 7.6. when i poured out the upper ph test, however, the after color was purple (8.4ph). i did this with two different test tubes. does this mean my ph is 8.4?

You take the reading when you have the 5 ml of water in the vial. Any other colors that come from pouring it out or remnants of water clinging to the vial after pouring out the water are inaccurate.
Make sure that when you add the drops, you close the vial with the cap supplied and shake the vial to disperse the reagent properly. (y)
