Good news and yes keep doing small water changes as that link says, as nitrite is actually more deadly than ammonia depending on your pH, you always want to test everything ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, nitrate at a very high level isn't good for the fish either it weakens their immune system, should be 5-40 ppm but I've had way higher without issues, plants will definitely keep the nitrate in check but always test everything as I mentioned ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph
