Are slate caves safe?

I wanted to make some caves for my fish using slate. I was wondering if it would be safe to use slate from a store like Home Depot or Lowes. This way I could pay by the sq ft vs. paying by the pound at the pet store.

Slate should be fine I've used it in tanks and never had a problem I brought slate tiles from a hardware store worked great so I carnt see a problem
