Attaching moss balls

So real simple question how do I attach moss balls? Do I just take the whole ball and tie it to the driftwood/rock or do I cut it in half and flatten it out then attach?

I believe moss balls should be free, as well as rotated occasionally so that it is exposed to light on all sides. At least that is what I do with mine. I have never thought about how to attach them. Perhaps tie black thread around it.
