base rock

I was just told by a friend not to use mined rock as base rock, they said something about minerals in the earth or something. I bought almost 100 lbs of the stuff at 3 dollars a pound from local LFS. Hopefully I was told wrong because I already have the stuff in my tank and am starting to see coralline growing on it. Any advise would be appreciated.
