Hi. I have a ten gallon tank with one betta, never any tankmates. He has a heater, a sponge filter and a regular filter. He has water changes every week, gets fed NLS and has SeaChem Prime. Recently he developed something on his mouth.

Now, he has this:

See the white thing hanging from his mouth? What is that? In the other pictures, and depending upon perspective, it looks like a pimple. What is it?

I treated with 3 rounds of Kanaplex and it didn't help at all. What is this white/pimple thing?

It sounds like I'm thinking along the same lines there - bacterial infection of cotton mouth. I'd add furan 2 with the kanaplex for a stronger treatment.

Kana didn't do much. Someone suggested Triple Sulfa. Go Triple or use Furan-2?

I love Furan-2, every time I use it, it works. So go Triple or Furan, you think? He's had a break for a day or two, so tomorrow I am dosing at night.

I'd go furan 2. It's the newer med. And combine it with kanaplax as both together are more effective.

Triple sulpha works and is easier to get hold of in Australia (which says its dated) but when I've used it with fish with pine coning, the fish don't make it. This could be unfair as by the time I can catch the fish in the main tank, the pine coning or ruffled scales says they are in a bad way anyways (probably why I can finally catch them :( ).

As kanaplax is said to be bad for kidneys in fish for long treatments, I'd be hesitant to mix these two of kana and sulpha meds.

If it persists I'd look at keeping temp on low side and salting or using tetra fungus guard (which contains furan 2) to try and knock it down so the antibiotics can finish it off. The tetra fungus guard also covers fungus as a just in case (just in case useful fyi).

Almost done with the furan-2, and it's still there. Im gonna drop the temp maybe even more. I have fungus guard. Wondering if I should try that.

The cottonmouth I've seen in fish has been either like a white, smooth pimple almost on the mouth or a white patch like a drop of white rubber (if that makes sense) or white wisps. In severe cases I could see surrounding flesh being eaten away and going translucent. Meds can slow down the growth rate or knock it back.

Lympho has looked more like a warty growth. Slower growth rate. Fish not so bothered.

Probably lots of different cases.

If lympho nothing much possible as you know except checking clean water (low nitrates, no metals) and good food.

If you think cotton mouth then I'd do the tetra fungus guard and kanaplax together. Many cases of cotton mouth require combined meds and low temp as well as something to knock it down initially (eg salt or one of the oxidisers / dyes). Treatment time is at least a week and 2 weeks easily possible.

Hope this helps.
