Are bettas sold at a certain time of the year? Over the summer the Petsmart by me had a shelf full of the bettas in the cups and now they don't have any. Same with all the other pet stores in my area. I asked some of the employees, but they said they didn't know. I live in Northwest Ohio if that makes a difference.

its probably because of the weather. my local stores are getting some worse looking fish in, and they said it happens every year in winter. thats the only thing i could thinkk, but there are still those poor little bettas in the sauce cups on the shelves of petsmart here

In Northeast Ohio there is less than summertime, it seems like at PetSmart in North Canton has A LOT of females though. If you want a Betta really bad you could try there =D.
