Betta's tail since yesterday

Yesterday morning my betta's tail was just fine and this morning I awoke to see his tail was shredded practically overnight. I hurriedly checked his water and it was fine at 0 ammonia / nitrites and 30ppm nitrates to which I did a 50% water change anyways. His tankmates include 3 nerite snails and 4 cory cats.

Could fin rot really have acted this quickly? Or could it possibly be something else?

AFAIK Bettas can "blow" their tail ...dropping most of it. Or if stressed they may even bite their own tails.
