I have a semi aggressive community with 14 tiger barbs, 2 kissing gouramis, 1 rainbow shark and the pleco.

I've noticed since day one the pleco will occasionally get lighter on his back, and later he will be dark again.

Is this normal or should I be concerned?

Water parameters are 0 ammonia,0 nitrite, 10-20 nitrate, temp 78+/- 1 degree except during water changes.

They are known to change color a bit. They will commonly lighten up when stressed. But also, some will darken when they get excited around feeding time or some other time when they get excited. Some color change is normal and not a cause for concern. If the fish stays very bleached out, or has clamped fins, you should consider ways to lessen its stress, but if this is only some occasional lightening, that it fine.
