I don't believe so, as they don't dig.

They do dig but they don't necessarily need sand.

Ok, thank you all! I had read on another fish forum from someone that was selling them that they needed sand because they dig and that person refused to sell them some rams because they had gravel! :-/ I had never read that anywhere else so I just wanted to make sure before I purchased some! Thank you all!
