Jesus dude, good luck with everything. Just keep swimming, focus on whatever helps you not dwell on the waiting part so you don't drive yourself nuts.

I talked to a good friend of mine who's an oncologist, He put me at ease. I'll almost certainly be fine. Absolutely worst disaster scenario - they take the finger to be safe. We'll find out in 4-6 weeks once specialists determine detailed nature of it.

No longer freaking out. It's suck to lose a digit but I'd gladly trade it to watch my daughter grow up.

Amen to that dude

Have I mentioned I love the moonlight? 1487224648490.jpg

30% water change tonight. Gravel vacced left side. So much poop/mud. Did not disturb driftwood.

Plants pearling... After lights out. Weird?

Wow - that's doing well on pearling. My CO2 goes off before lights but not any pearling after lights off. I think, never noticed any - will have to check tonight.

Minor update: I have some minor concerns about my water source (city water) and have reached out to the water work department.

Their average (fairly stable) PH is 7.91. They classify their water as "Medium Hard" but couldn't give me any actual readings. They encouraged me to e-mail in and ask for more detailed readings and that a tech would get back to me.

I started the inquiry asking if there was any publicly accessible water parameter logs. Back when I lived in a neighboring city the water grid got water from two sources: The lake, as well as groundwater. Depending on how the stars aligned (No discernible reason) the water would go from wonderfully soft to Liquid rock. Apparently where I live now is exclusively fed from treated lake-water, so it should be more stable.

My tap water is at about 7.9PH, 6dGh and 12dKh. at the upper end of what discus will live in. Definitely not breeding unless I invest in an RO Unit.

I'm curious to see if my fridge filter (5 micron) will do anything to these levels. I may test that tonight if I have time.

I'm getting ansty, I really want to start getting new plants going, but I think first I'm going to strip out about 50% of my crypts.

IF i have time tonight (doubtful) I'll probably clean my cansiter filter. Its been almost 2 years and I'm a bit nervous about what I'll find. Since day 1 i've had a sponge over the inlet (also never cleaned) so I am confident that there are no snails in the filter (which killed my old fluval) so heres hoping. Ill update tonight regardless.

Also, Re-mounted the moonlights a bit better. I need to find a plastic channel/stick to stick them to properly. This is semi permanent now. With the water change/toppoff it loks much better, but there's still a lot of glare off the water.

Please ignore snail eggs. I need to scrape the glass again.

(I set my phone to manual mode. Its a fair bit dimmer in person.

anddd a video. because why not

I've found that aquariums do wonders for taking your mind off of personal health issues. Yours is looking so much better. Your personal insights are awesome in regards to digits & daughters, it takes most people longer to get to that realization. It is inspiring to watch the difference in your aquarium as well.

I added lights. I fixed my old Higher power LED's so now I've got a good chunk of lighting. Hopefully enough to grow some ground cover and colorful plants

Love your angelfish. Recently lost one similar to yours. How old is he/she?

Fingers crossed for you, no pun intended.
Bahaha that's awesome. My current running gag is to give friends/family the middle finger (it's my middle finger, right hand) and say sorry, I gotta get them in while I can.

I'm close to pulling trigger on building a new suppliment light. My two new purchased led fixtures are not sufficient for growing foreground plants. My old DIY led light IS powerful, but is only white. The second fixture I'm building will be pretty much double my output, but ads the proper wavelengths for plant growth. 6 blue, 4 red and 4 green LED's. Plus the 12 5000k white LED's and I should be golden. My whites are driven at max (1300mah) and I've selected colored LED's that have a max of 1000mah so I can run them all off the same driver.

Benn following this intently. Good work so far! I do have a question, do you keep your moon light on all night? If so, does that make the fish stressed or sluggish in the morning?

I haven't noticed any sluggishness but I'm also rarely there when the lights turn on. Currently all three lights turn on at different times over time. The moonlights aren't that bright, however they are also on in the middle of the tank, the sides are still pretty well completely dark. I could put it on a timer too I suppose...

How long during the day are your main lights on and at what times? I am also rebuilding my tank and have bought a more powerful light but don't know when and how long to have the lights on so I am asking around for different opinions. Thank you!!

~8 hours a day.

Well your tank looks good! I assume you feed your fish at night?

Also, what is the timetable for the Discus? What kinds are you looking for? Just out of curiosity. My tank is too small for discus.

Ideally 6 or 7 discus, but minimum 5.

Against the remmendations on this forum, I'm going to get younglings (2-3 inches). I've grown them out.

I will be mostly avoiding pigeon blood discus because I don't want them to pepper with my darker substrate.

My timeline is about 4 months until discus. It'll take a while for all these changes I'm making to stabilize.

No feeding at night, fish don't do a good job of rating it all then.

Automatic feeder feeds Once at about 3pm when the lights turn on, and then again at 9pm

Came home from the long weekend to a bit of algae growth. Green stuff that doesn't scrape off with the magnet scraper so I took the razor to the glass. Most plants are pearling now and my co2 rate is at 3.2bubbles per minute. Drop checker is a deep green, but with my high KH that means nothing.

Took ph test: 7.57.

KH sitting at 11 degrees, so that's a minor victory.

Means I'm sitting at about 9 ppm co2. Which explains algae.

Edit: Pictures!

Growth - a LOT. The grass (forgot name... 4+ years old) was at deaths door, every time it'd re-root it'd die off.

Within 4 days I've got new shoots and INCHES of growth.

Last update for the night. I've ordered heatsinks! I'll be for sure making the supplimentry LED system now. AliExpress so I'll have to wait a few MONTHS for it, but for 63 bucks I think I found the best deal I could find. I found a local place that would charge me a mere 230 dollars for a 4 foot length. :-(

Details on lights:
