Bumblebee Cichlid

Does anyone know at what size a male bumblebee cichlid will begin to turn black. I have one that is about three inches, but still hasn't changed its color to black. Is it safe to assume it is a female?

They don't always go black. They just get darker. Females can also turn black on there own if they want.
