Can Canister filter be used in a reef

I have two eheims

can I use them when I change to a reef system
I also have 402 powerhead and prizim skimmer


lights are going to be VHO

can I still use the canister filters

I assume since you said "reef system" you're planning to have LR and LS. So IMO they can be used for circulation and a place to put carbon when necessary but with no filiter media.
