Can I use crushed up charcoal briquettes for carbon in my filter?

Well, what do you think? Can I use crushed up charcoal briquettes and save some money?

I'm not certain but I don't think it would work. Also i am willing to bet that the binding agent that they use for them would be harmful to the fish.
