Simple question. I'm looking for experience or research, not speculation, on whether goldfish and koi are genetically close enough to breed if placed in the same environment?

Gold fish are derived from the Crusaian carp, they were domesticated for thousands of years. About 800 years ago they were bred for colour instead of food.

Koi are the same species as the common carp. Within 1 to 2 generations , without culling, the colours we see in them revert back to their wild colouration.

This being different species is why they produce infertile offspring.
