Cleaning aquarium decorations

Does anybody have a trick for cleaning aquarium decorations? I clean my fish tank out every third week. Recently my decorations have been getting black algae and debris on them. I spray them off with the sink and rub them with my fingers but I cant get all of the black of. The flat objects I am able to use a tooth brush to remove almost all of it, but things like artificial plants are very difficult to clean. Is there a solution that I can soak them in?

Something like a mushroom brush should work nicely.

I use a small vegetable brush that I buy at WalMart. The bristles are stiff and it works really well.

If you have plastic plants you could use an algaecide. I use algicide-rx it has kept the algae down. My only problem is on the glass and I can go a month before I need to scrape.
