Used to have a pleco suck on plants to clean them, currently not dying but brown film over plants make them look dirty. any recommendations to keep plant healthy and clean?

Not sure what other species you have but most of my fish will peck at stuff on plant leaves.

If you do feel the need to sponge it off, just use the algae scrubber that you have for your tank walls. It doesn't hurt the plants.

Good call. A new peppermint pleco that doesn't do great job at cleaning plants. Bunch of tetras and five cory cats. And today, finally, my discus.
