Cleaning tank

I have bought a vac for when I clean my tank, I have sand at the bottom so when I'm cleaning it I'm loosing a bit each time, has anyone got any suggestions on how to clean the sand without actually sucking some up each time. Thanks

You don't need to vacuum the actual sand since stuff can't fall down into the sand, just hover above it so you can pull any detritus off the top without taking away any sand.
