I'm putting together a new planted tank, a 46 gal bowfront. I've purchased this light:

The unit itself has a lexan cover over the light area. On the box it states that the unit should be used over a glass cover only. Is this true even if I purchase the accessory stands for it? Is there a disadvantage to having an open-top tank?

Well, it is not waterproof, and although there is a piece of glass over the light, I would think that if water got on it, it would short out, or the likes of it.

I am sure they say that because they won't warranty the fixture if it is not on a glass covered top, but the other thing is that these lights are not exactly fixed firmly on the top, and if they are bumped they could easily go in the water. I have these without the "legs" so I don't know how stable they are with them, but I consider it risky. Also evaporation is going to be dramatic, I would imagine.
