My 10 gal has been up and is at the very end of it's cycle, afaik. Last nite after cleaning up my QT tank, I did my usual inspection of this tank, which is inhabited by 1 Comet goldfish, and 2 gold zebra danios. They were active as normal, zipping around the tank, and coming to the top at one corner (where they get fed). They only get fed once a day (at noon-ish), and get regular water changes (20% weekly), with some extras (15%) every other day because the danios are new introductions, and I expect an ammonia spike.
Today I woke up to find one of the danios was swimming askew. Unable to maintain attitude, twirling about the long axis, and it looks as though it is partially paralyzed on one side. Also, the gill covers show bright red color.
I removed this fish to a small bucket with fresh water, and tested the tank water:
ph: 7.8
Ammonia/Ammonium: .25 mg/L
Nitrite: ~ .3 mg/L
Nitrate: ~ 5.0 mg/L
Temp: ~ 74 deg F
When I left for work this afternoon, the fish was all but dead, and if it does die, I may be able to inspect it further for a cause, but what should I look for? Other than the irregular swimming, and coloration, there were no external signs of disease, and less than 8 hours earlier, it was doing quite well.
I am worried that some strange disease has infected my tank, and I will have to start all over again.
