Looking for some advice from someone who keeps Diamond Tetras.

We have had our planted tank for six months now. Currently holds 5 Diamond Tetras, 5 baby diamonds (they recently bread), 12 neon tetras, 6 amano shrimp and most recently 6 Otos.

My question is, are diamond tetras aggressive fish? Since we have had them we notice that they do move around the tank quite arraticly sometimes. Over time, we have noticed that our neon tetras don’t always come out of the plants much and we wondered if it was to do with the diamonds. In addition, we added some Otos yesterday and they do not seem keen on the new arrivals. Although they haven’t done anything to the otos they seem to be circling them quite a bit.

We picked diamonds as we believed they would be good beginner fish. They obviously seem happy in their environment as they have recently bread. Should we be worried about our other fish?

Every fish and every tank is different. What might be considered a non-aggressive species in general may not always be the case when you are looking at individual fish and groups of fish.

What you might be seeing is social fish not being comfortable in such a small group. These fish can show some aggression, but usually its within the group. When the group isnt big enough to share the aggression within the group it can go a few ways. Aggression could be concentrated on a single fish within the group. Aggression could be transferred to other fish outside the group.

Maybe when the babies get a bit older and can join in things will settle down.
