Just trying to understand why some of my commons are gold, while some are dark like a common carp. Will they remain this color, as some seem to have gold coloring with dark patches. What's up with this?

So baby commons that are gold or black will stay that color until adult size and the same for gold variety with patches of black?

Unlikely they will stay the same color. Any juveniles that turned black from the original wild type color of fry, will likely turn gold/orange with time. Goldfish with patches of black will also likely lose the black 'patches' with time as well. Orange/gold babies may eventually turn white. Color is not static in goldfish (particularly darker colors) and they may undergo various color transformations through out their lives. :)
