driftwood and catfish

I know that some of the SA cats like the bristlenose need driftwood in the tank. Do synodontis pet. or luc. need driftwood? Are there any other differences I should consider between these SA and African cats?

No, synos don't need driftwood, it's a very rare thing in the rift lakes

Why do synos need to live in groups of 3 or more?

In the wild, many syno species live in large shoals, there's a video on YouTube called Jewels of the Rift that talks about Tanganyika and it's cichlids and wildlife. It's a 6 part video but in one of the parts talks about the breeding habits of s. multipunctuatus. Shows how they live in the wild, quite interesting, I'd link the video if I wasn't on my phone at work
