My wife is from the Philippines and so we have a lot of appliances she brought over from home or has acquired from friends visiting home. They work using a travel adaptor or shaver adaptor, but arent safe and we had a Xmas light fitting explode on us a couple of years ago (this was probably compounded by poor build quality though).
Shaver adaptors are better as they are fused, whereas travel adaptors arent always. If you pay a bit more you can get an adaptor/ converter to step down from 240v to 110v. We are working our way through everything and replacing the foreign bought stuff as at some point there will be a fire.
Id be more comfortable using a portable appliance that is monitored through use, like a hairdryer, but not something that is switched on and left to run unsupervised. The converter would be my minimum measure.
