When we set up our 29 gallon tank, we had moved everything from a 10 gallon. The substrate from the 10 gallon was a mixture of pea gravel and rainbow gravel because of the young assistant. We also included lava rock and fancy black sand for the plants.
The lava rock didn't last long. It collected waste far too easily and seemed impossible to clean. Each water change, I would remove the pieces that had worked to the top. Pretty much every time I did this, I had to replant most of the plants.
It was about two weeks ago that I really dug in and got all of the lava rock out. I told myself this was it! I don't need to make anymore changes! No more replanting! No more freaking these poor fish out!
But when I sit here looking at the tank, the rainbow gravel really bugs me.
I've been researching, and it seems like the best way to exchange substrate is all at once. The repeated disturbances getting all the lava rock out supports the all-at- once model.
So here's my question:
Should I make peace with the neon? If I don't and do change it out, am I going to hate whatever else I put in there?
I don't mind how the sand looks interspersed, but otherwise you can see what I'm talking about in this picture.
