I get that it's a build up of waste ... And is in some instances desirable...
But it's not just piled up fish poo right?
I ask because this interesting thing is happening in my tank, it's mostly sand with some gravel. A few plants. Lots of snails, fully cycled prior to fish.
So at one point I missed a gravel vac by a few days and it looked yucky and then all of a sudden it looked a lot better.
It's white sand, the poo is usually pretty red. It's hit this point where the sand isn't totally white but there's no obvious solid debris. It's like there's a little beige staining sinking into the top of the sand. The color of diatoms but not sitting on the surface like they do.
As I study low tech tanks, Walstad, etc., and add more plants ... I'm inclined to keep letting this go as long as the water parameters are good and it's not ugly?
