Feeding ring

Are these feeding rings ment to stay in the tank? It works great, I just noticed there is styrophome in there to keep it at the surface. So can I just leave it there or is it better to take it out when I'm done?

Id take it out when done, as it will be one more thing to scrub clean of algae.
