You change your avatar in your user cp. It's one of the links on top. User CP->avatar and upload.

You could cover the hood with saren wrap or something similar. Can't think of anything else. They do eventually find their way up. I had one for a few months and found him crawling along the carpet one day. He'd crawled up the heater wire. Made sure to tape it up after that.
