Thanks for the advice I just want to get something different. I have sand in the bottom so do any of those filters work with sand

I have sand in both my 55 and my 37 tropical. I run a 306 on both of them. I also added a power head to both tanks for the added current, plus it helps keep the poop and excess food off of the bottom.

Regarding sand, the problem is sand getting into the impeller. On HOB filters it is usually on the input side before the media. Most canisters have it on the output after the media.

I run a Fluval 405 with two power heads on a 55. Just keep in mind that you want to turn your water 4-6 times an hour. What the filter box GPH is without media. The denser the media it's going to go down and vise versa.. But with that said my tank stays clean but I would credit the 405, I credit myself for doing PWC 2-3 a week 25-30%.
