Picked up a few bags of these for just a couple of bucks at the dollar tree store.
I usually get my equipment, filters and such off Craigslist, this filter I picked up real cheap and didn't want to spend more money on media. The plastic scrubbers can't be beat for the money.

Wow didn't know you could do that! Does it have to be food grade plastic or does any old plastic scrubbie work??

I have used broken plastic pieces, small PVC tubing cuttings etc.
Yes any plastic only scrubbie will work as long as there is no sponge inside or cleaning agents. I personally like something with rough surfaces, gives me the impression bacteria needs something to cling on to. I was using filter floss in my Fluval canisters but they are too fine and clog fast, also it slows considerably the flow.
This wont polish your water but for sure will be a good biological filter.
