Canister. But if you can't afford a large canister (rated for 75 and above) then get a AQ110.

How much space does the canister take up inside the tank

It doesn't take up much space. The hoses run up the back of the tank, then you have the intake which is similar to a HOB intake, and a spray bar which you lay across the back of the tank in the water and it evenly distributes water. My spray bar broke, and its just open and shoots water out. Nice strong current, though.

I run Fluval 406's on my 55g tanks and they work great. Plus you can always add an HOB on the tank later if you need extra filtration. I did that when there were 4 large goldfish in the 55's.
