They generally cause problems with the roots getting tangled up in grating. When they clog, everything is coming up with it.

They are also really outdated, it is generally a no-no for an UG filter in a planted tank because of what AC already said. I wouldnt use them anyways, they aren't really that great IMO and are a pain...
