first reading

does 1.0 sound right for the first ammonia reading after a day with shrimp?? im asking because i bought this kit off ebay and I wasnt too sure if it was used or not....it didnt look it, but to be on the safe side I thought i'd ask.

What does the kit test for, NH3 or NH4?

Any measure of ammonia is good when cycling as long as it's NH3 and not a 0.25 reading.

The kit test is for both nh3 and nh4

Only concern yourself with the NH3 test results. NH4 means nothing in SW as long as the pH remains above 7.8

As far as this being a normal reading after one day, I'd say no unless you have something in there other than the dry base rock. Did you add any LFS rock, live sand or had the tank been set up for any time before the shrimp was added? You really shouldn't see an ammonia reading for a few days at least otherwise.
