I wouldn't, its full of silicates and phosphates that will cause nasty algae blooms later on in saltwater
 
Can you use pool filter sand for substrate in your tank
Thats what i have in my 30 gal. Mine is a freshwater and i havent had any issues with it. I have heard of people using playsand but said to be messy during cleaning.
 
Pool filter sand is just fine in our systems. You will have a much longer run with diatoms than most due to the silicates in the sand, but it is simply waiting it out.
