freshwater salting

I've heard of salting freshwater tanks as a stress reducing method, and a little bit about pH control. Are there any other reasons for adition of salt?

I usually increase the salt in my tank whent he fish are sick, it's supposed to "improve gill function"
BUT, it's no good for my plants, they start to die back if I use too much or for too long

Some fish such as Mollies benefit from the addition of salt. Since no fish comes from truly fresh water, I add salt to my tanks. However, many people figure there is enough salt in tap water.

Where i work, we use straight up water softening salt.

I used it to medicate my fish. 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons dosed for 3 days then wait. Clears up a lot of external maladies.
