I decided to turn my nano tank into a planted tank. I use to have a 75 gallon fully planted tank years ago and used gravel. Does anyone have any suggestions on substrate? I'd really like to use black sand, but didn't know how root systems would hold up in it. Thanks!

Sand or small gravel is fine. If you are willing to spend more money or put in more work, there are better options available.

The cheap and very good option is use soil under the gravel or sand. Plants growing very good in my tanks with soil under gravel. I use screen between soil and gravel. If you like use sand good idea is buy Malaysian Trumpet Snails.
