getting started

I'm new to aquariums and I bought a 5.5 gallon starter kit tank. I was wondering what fish I could put in it and how many? I was thinking Betta and/or tettras? Also any advice on getting the tank started as far as water and ammonia/nitrate stuff?

You will need an API Master Freshwater test kit to check your water parameters. In a tank that small I would try one betta and maybe a mystery snail. A plant or two would also be a nice addition.
