I saw a green plec in my lfs and am keen to get one but im not sure if they can handle the high pH of my malawi tank (around 8.4).

I am pretty sure you can put a common or sailfin pleco in an african cichlid tank and after reading the profile on Planet Catfish (excellent site) for the green plec, it seems perfect - loves strong current and rockwork and doesn't need plants or bogwood! plus i need a good algae eater.

grows to a good size for my 55g tank as well - around 7 inches.

I had a green that was sold as a common..
I had some of the hardest water known to man
KH up around 8.6, HIGH PH to mid 8's, good old iron filled well water.
It was a VERY HARDY fish :p

It did defend itself from nipping though..
I had SA's, your particular Africans are probibly less likely to bug it.
