guardian aquarium heater

I bought a tank of craigslist and it came with a 300w guardian heater, like this one.

The knob on top just seems to spin in either direction, is this normal? How do I know when it's set correctly? Also, is 300w to much for a 37 tall?

Here's the instruction sheet: Guardian Heaters

It looks like they skipped out on putting any sort of gauge on the heater. You'll have to set it using a thermometer. Definitely not the best design I've seen.

Thanks, I finally got to the instructions.

it turns out the temperature control knob was actually busted so they sent me a cascade 300w as a replacement. any opinions on that heater?
