One of my live rocks has short lttle brown stems on it.On occasion they "shoot out" a thin string out into the tank. One end stays attached and the other just floats around. The longest i have seen is about a foot long, more often then not they are just a few inches.

Also, most of the time they are no strings at all...I'm not sure at all why the come out nor have I been able to corralate the sightings with any thing I do with the tank like feeding, cleaning ect.

According to the wife the retract back to the stem, but I have not seen that happen yet.

Each stem has only one "string" and each string is about the diamater of spider web material.

Any ideas as to what it is?

Sounds like you have some Vermetid gastropods. They are snails that build calcareous tubes and send out mucus coated "stings" to collect detrius. They are harmless.
