I have a 240 gal. freshwater tank and i'm going to change over to salt. I've been reading about live sand and being that I live on the gulf and our sand is white could I use some of this for my substrate?

Hi, welcome to AA!

Some people use things from the ocean for their tanks, but that comes with risks. For example, you could end up adding a disease to your tank. However, some people use stuff from the ocean, and they don't have any problems. It all depends. :)
If you have anymore questions don't be afraid to ask!

Welcome to AA! :)

I think you would be better off to purchase dry aragonite sand. The bagged live sand is a gimmick anyway, and the stuff from the beach can bring who knows what into your tank. The plain aragonite sand will become live, in time.

We have lots of articles and a "Getting Started" subforum for SW and Reef, so feel free to post a thread there if you have any more questions!
