hermit crab help

How do people measure hermit crabs?
I read that mexican red leg hermit crabs get to 1.5 inches. Is that the shell, the crab itself or what?

They would measure the actual crab as shells vary in size

what part of the crab, do you know?

Probably from the tip of the longest leg to the back of the crab because logically if you think anything else would be the crabs diameter

how would you get it out of the shell to measure it?

Also, if it's possible, if the crabs at a size you'd like it to be just don't give it a bigger shell to grow into

Why do you need to measure it? That would be bit of a tricky situation haha

I have a pretty big shell and i wondered it it would use it.

Unless the shell is very big there's no harm putting it in, my hermits can hang upside down with shells on their backs twice the size, had them since they were tiny now one is quite big and the others still trying to catch up too him. If its his first shell swap heel be reluctant to stay in the shell first time but mine run to a new shell soon as I put one in haha
