Home made display cases

Howdy all. This is my first ever attempt at any sort of wood work. Got a pair of 15g tanks and I decided that to try building a couple stands/display cases (that were wife approved of course) so they can be set up in our front room.

Anyway, they're going to be open using redwood 2x2 corner posts. Top and bottom is 3/4" oak plywood and shelves are 1/2" MDF board. Total dimensions will be 24"W x 14"D x 35"T. Still have a lot to do before complete but doing little bits and pieces as I get time.

Hoping it turns out as well as I picture.

Its slow going. With how busy I have been, really haven't been able to get much done. But have the main pieces together now. And hoping to be able to finish it tomorrow evening. All that's left is shelves, trim, and poly.

Have you completed this project yet? Have you thought about how much weight you are working with? 124lbs of water plus rock or sand is a lot for 2x2 legs. If you wouldn't stand on it and bounce I wouldn't put a tank on it. They are very nice and for your first wood working project you should be proud of them. I would suggest some kind of cross bracing from leg to leg so the don't try and bow outwards. Don't make just another square inside the legs. If you would like a drawing of what I'm talking about, I don't mind helping you out

I have completed them. Did research before hand about using 2x2s as the legs and in the way they are, should be able to hold well over of 400lbs.

They've been holding water for a couple weeks now and are rock solid. Attached the best picture I have, phone wants to turn the others sideways.

Right now, I'm half tempted to cut off the posts at the top shelf. They were built to go on each side of my 36g but room layout changed after getting furniture. So now they go around the TV and I'm not really comfortable with the height difference. They don't move or sway at all (all joints screwed in with wood glue) but just doesn't look good to me.
