What is this brown stuff? I'm assuming its a form of algae. Is it good, bad, common?

Looks like diatomes, they're common in new tank setups. Google them.

I just fought the diatom problem. I bought a uv sterilizer in my QT tank I run it 2 days a week. I heard if you run it all the time it's not good for the tank. Someone might have more info on this but it has stopped my problem. It also has cured the iCh problem.

Ok, I've been doing a little reading and I have increased my lighting so I'm gonna back those back down to 8 hours and do a PWC today and clean the stuff out. I also need to find out what the problem is with my protein skimmer. One day it bubbles like crazy the next day there's hardly any bubbles at all. Thanks for the info!
