What is the white thing growing on my star polyp? Can it be causing the polyp to die? I thought maybe it's a small sponge.

I'm pretty sure it's not killing your star polyp, usually they are beneficial and a sign of a well established aquarium

Sponge. Harmless filter feeder unless it starts to overgrow your coral.
